Perai Free Industrial Zone (formerly Prai Industrial Estate), Butterworth was developed by Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and it consists of four phases. It was developed after MIEL Perai industrial area (Kawasan MIEL), Prai in the 1970's to support industrial park establishment in Butterworth, Penang. It's to complement Bayan Lepas Free Trade Zone (FTZ) at that time as lands for industrial are scarcely in Penang island. With Penang bridge completed in 1985, the demographics in Prai has been growing fast. That in terms supply of skill workers to support factories.
